By some amazing coincidence, the 150thanniversary of Thames’ inaugural run back in 1868 fell on a regular Wednesday Training night. Last night, 24 members ran around an 8-mile route that was a close as we could get to the course used in 1868, starting and finishing at our original home, The Kings Head in Roehampton.
The 138th Short Distance Handicap was won by Heather Statham, who completed the 5-mile course in 37:50. The Short Distance Handicap and Challenge Race was the first club run of the new season.
Our 151st season kicked off on Saturday with the Surrey Road Relay Championship which was a great day as always. Seven Thames teams enjoyed the unseasonably warm weather with some fine performances.
Summer is a relatively quieter season for Thames in terms of club races but that didn’t stop Saltires from producing many great performances over the hotter months.
Back in June two brave Thames men, Matt Jones and Ed Catmur attempted one of the classic ultra long distance challenges in the UK.
Thames hosted their annual Parkland Relays event in Richmond Park. A great success, 100 teams enjoyed wonderful weather and after-race catering at the Clubhouse.
